SOCIAL EXPERIENCE
F S –   for-prot companies that compete in the
market – is a civil society organization that seeks to benet the poorest layers of
society. FS’ experience clearly shows that, in searching for the common good,
the pursuit of private, not-for-prot activities is both legitimate and worthy, a
nding that disputes the notion that public nancing is a requisite to achieve the
public good, and leads to the erroneous and paralysing conclusion that private
interests are motivated solely by prot (Durán, ). FS freely elected to run its
rms driven by principles other than mere prot, without precluding those that
generate economic value. Hence the rm can be viewed as a key agent aiming
squarely for the common good, both in generating economic value and its pri-
mary distribution. An economic system that seeks to produce goods and services
by overlooking the common good does so at risk of its own destruction.
Viewed in this light, a business rm must harness economic productivity to-
gether with social impact, within an ecient and professional framework. At the
heart of business activity lies creative participation in the search for solutions for
society’s main problems. Business rms are key economic actors, the only means
by which economic value may be generated. Day after day, businesses strive to
respond to unsatised needs. When they succeed in this endeavour they create
value for society, contributing to its improvement. Value is created each time a
business responds to an unsatised need.
