Resumen
El presente capítulo ofrece un marco teórico-conceptual que sustenta la perspecti-
va analítica fundamentada en el concepto de régimen internacional regional (RIR).
Nuestro argumento principal se sustenta en el entendimiento de que los esque-
mas de integración regional implican la creación de instituciones comunes, es de-
cir, de RIR. En este sentido, las organizaciones de integración regional (OIR) estarían
vinculadas a los RIR, los cuales sentarían las bases para la conguración de su ar-
quitectura organizacional. La exploración de la categoría analítica de RIR demandó,
en primer lugar, abordar las transformaciones generadas por la aparición del nue-
vo regionalismo en el campo de los estudios regionales, considerando el escenario
de creciente globalización. En segundo lugar, fue necesario aclarar (y adaptar) al-
gunos conceptos claves del campo, con el n de evitar imprecisiones y concretizar
una denición formal de lo que sería un RIR, denición que fue propuesta en un ter-
cer momento. Finalmente, la última sección se dedicó a explorar, de forma teóri-
ca, los vínculos existentes entre las OIR y los RIR. El intento de complementar los es-
tudios regionales con perspectivas alternativas que provengan de nuestro esfuerzo
de interpretar las realidades latinoamericanas se mostró fructífero en la medida que
nos permitió identicar la relación intrínseca que guardan los RIR con las OIR. Así, el
uso de la categoría de RIR en el análisis de las OIR permitirá comprender mejor el lu-
gar que ocupan las organizaciones dentro del sistema en el que operan.

Abstract
This chapter offers a theoretical-conceptual framework that supports the analytical
perspective based on the concept of Regional International Regime (RIR). Our main
argument is based on the understanding that regional integration schemes imply the
creation of common institutions, that is, of RIR. Hence, the Regional Integration Or-
ganizations (OIRs) would be linked to the RIRs, which would lay the foundations for
the conguration of their organizational architecture. The exploration of the ana-
lytical category of RIR demanded, in the rst place, to address the transformations
generated by the appearance of the new regionalism in the eld of regional stud-
ies, considering the scenario of increasing globalization. Secondly, it was necessary
to clarify (and adapt) some key concepts of the eld, in order to avoid inaccuracies
and concretize a formal denition of what a RIR would be, a denition that was pro-
posed in a third moment. Finally, the last section was dedicated to exploring, in a
theoretical way, the existing links between the OIRs and the RIRs. The attempt to com-
plement the regional studies with alternative perspectives that come from our effort
to interpret Latin American realities proved fruitful to the extent that it allowed us to
identify the intrinsic relationship that the RIRs have with the OIRs. Thus, the use of the
RIR category in the analysis of OIRs will allow a better understanding of the place that
organizations occupy within the system in which they operate.
