Resumen
El propósito de este artículo es describir el
funcionamiento del ejército oficial de la Nueva
Granada durante dos guerras civiles ocurridas en
el siglo XIX, la Guerra de los Supremos (1839 -
1841) y la Guerra de 1851, también llamada
Revolución Conservadora. Se trata de una
indagación sobre el funcionamiento real de una
institución poco estudiada en la historiografía
colombiana como es el ejército. El contexto
fueron las reformas liberales, librecambio e
inversión del poder del clero dentro del Estado.
El m étodo es el de la microhistoria para
documentar la organización interna del ejército
nacional, formas de reclutamiento, educación
militar, asistencia médica y vestuario. En la
revisión documental e interpretación se evidencia
la discriminación, la jerarquía, la subvaloración del
trabajo desempeñado, el abandono y poca
preocupación estatal para brindar alimento, salud
y bienestar a los integrantes del ejército de la
Nueva Granada.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to describe
the operation of the official Army of New
Granada during two civil wars in the 19th
century, the Guerra of the Supreme (1839-
1841) and war of 1851, also called Revolution
conservative. It is an investigation about the
actual functioning of an institution little studied
in the Colombian historiography as the army.
The context were the liberal reforms, free
trade and investment in the power of the
clergy within the State. The method is that of
micro-history to document the internal
organization of the national army, ways of
recruitment, military education, medical care
and clothing. The document review and
interpretation is evidence of discrimination,
the hierarchy, the undervaluing of the work
performed, abandoned and little concern State
to provide food, health and wellness to
members of the army of the New Granada.

O objetivo deste artigo é descrever a operação do exército oficial de Nova Granada durante duas
guerras civis, no século XIX, o Guerra do Supremo (1839-1841) e guerra de 1851, também chamado
